Aylmer Police send out warning after local loses nearly $6,000 in online puppy scam

Officers say the victim believed they were buying a Dachshund from Newfoundland, sending e-transfers for the dog, shipping, and insurance, before a final demand for vaccination fees raised red flags

Aylmer Police are warning the community to be cautious when buying pets online after a local resident lost close to $6,000 in a puppy scam.

Police say they were contacted on September 29th after the victim sent several e-transfers to someone claiming to sell Dachshund puppies from Newfoundland. Communication took place through text and email with individuals using the names “Sushila Kunwar” and a supposed shipping representative from a company called “Ship It Ease.”

Investigators say the victim was asked to send additional payments for insurance and crate fees, before a final demand for $2,750 in vaccination costs raised suspicion and revealed the fraud.

Police are reminding residents to be extra careful when dealing with online sellers—especially when it comes to purchasing pets. They recommend verifying the legitimacy of breeders and sellers before sending any money.

Anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a similar scam is asked to contact Aylmer Police or report it to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
