Police urge vigilance after scammer poses as CIBC employee.
Aylmer Police are alerting the community after a recent phone scam left a resident out $1,800.
Police say the incident was reported on December 23, when the victim received an unsolicited call from someone claiming to be a representative from CIBC. The caller told the victim their chequing account had been compromised and that fraudulent charges had been detected.
As part of the call, the scammer asked the victim to provide debit card details to “confirm” ownership of the account. Shortly after the information was shared, police say the victim discovered their account had been emptied.
The Aylmer Police Service encourages citizens to be vigilant of unsolicited calls and to refrain from providing personal information over the phone.
Police also urge anyone who believes they may have been targeted by a scam to report it immediately.
