City of London says south-end drinking water safe despite temporary taste and odour changes

Residents can reduce the effect by using a cartridge water filter or chilling water in the fridge before drinking.

Some residents in the south end of the city may notice a temporary change in the taste and odour of their drinking water — but officials say it remains safe to drink.

The City of London says the change is caused by naturally occurring organic compounds in Lake Erie, and the issue is expected to last for about a week.

Residents can reduce the effect by using a cartridge water filter or chilling water in the fridge before drinking.

The Elgin Area Water Treatment Plant continues to test water quality regularly and can make adjustments as needed.

Roughly 85 per cent of London’s water comes from Lake Huron, and 15 per cent from Lake Erie, with more than 12,000 tests performed each year to ensure safety and quality.
