Health unit reports sharp rise in flu cases across Elgin, Oxford, St. Thomas

The greatest risk is for older adults, young children, and people with chronic health conditions.

Southwestern Public Health is urging residents in Elgin County, Oxford County, and the City of St. Thomas to take precautions as flu risk rises sharply across the region

New data from the health unit’s Respiratory Illness Activity Dashboard shows increasing outbreaks in congregate care settings, higher hospitalization rates, and growing community spread based on test positivity.

Together, those indicators suggest the flu is circulating widely across the region, with the greatest risk to older adults, young children, and people with chronic health conditions.

The health unit says residents can help slow the spread by taking simple, everyday precautions. Getting a flu shot remains one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of severe illness, but officials are also encouraging frequent handwashing, covering coughs and sneezes, staying home when sick, and regularly cleaning high-touch surfaces.

Residents are also advised to consider wearing a mask in crowded or enclosed spaces, especially when around people who may be more vulnerable.

Up-to-date information on local respiratory illness trends is available through the health unit’s online Respiratory Illness Activity Dashboard.
