Long‑time City Clerk Maria Konefal to retire May 1

The city says recruitment for a new City Clerk will begin today.


Long-time City Clerk Maria Konefal is set to retire this spring after nearly four decades of service to the City of St. Thomas.

The city announced Tuesday that Konefal will retire on May 1, marking 38 years in the role. 

“Maria has been an integral part of our City’s administration for close to four decades,” said Mayor Joe Preston “Her professionalism, institutional knowledge, and unwavering commitment to public service have left a lasting impact on St. Thomas. On behalf of Council and the community, I want to sincerely thank Maria for her exceptional service and wish her all the best in her well-earned retirement.”

In her final months with the city, Konefal is encouraging residents to take part in the upcoming municipal election, noting she has always believed in the importance of civic engagement and voter participation.

Konefal’s tenure has spanned decades of growth and change in St. Thomas, guiding the municipality through numerous elections, council transitions, and major administrative milestones.

The city says recruitment for a new City Clerk will begin Wednesday, February 4th.
