Move over law reinforced as snow squalls hit Ontario

Several vehicles ended up in ditches yesterday, prompting the reminder.

With a snow squall warning in effect across most of Ontario yesterday, the Ontario Provincial Police put out a reminder to motorist of their legal duty to slow down and move over for any emergency vehicle with flashing lights.

That message comes directly from Sergeant Ed Sanchuk of West Region OPP.

He noted that this requirement is not only the law — carrying a $490 fine and demerit points — but is essential to keeping first responders safe as they work in unpredictable situations.

Sanchuk says emergency crews often need to step into the roadway without warning due to circumstances outside their control.

Giving them space, he stressed, is a matter of common sense and respect for the people who serve the public every day
