As Ontarians gear up for the August long weekend, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society is reminding pet owners not to overlook their four-legged family members.
Whether you're heading to the cottage, camping, or firing up the barbecue, high temperatures and busy gatherings can pose serious risks for pets. As part of its No Hot Pets campaign, the SPCA is encouraging the public to plan ahead and keep animals safe.
“Long weekends are a time to unwind, but we can’t forget about the needs of our animals,” said Jennifer Bluhm, Vice President of Community Outreach Services. “With a bit of planning, you can help your furry companions stay safe, cool and comfortable all weekend long.”
Top tips from the Ontario SPCA include:
-
Never leave pets in vehicles – even for a few minutes. Cars heat up fast, even in the shade or with windows open.
-
Camping? Keep pets leashed, hydrated, and out of tents, campers, or unattended vehicles.
-
Boating? Use pet lifejackets, provide water and shade, and watch for signs of overheating.
-
Hosting a backyard BBQ? Keep pets away from grills and foods like onions, grapes, and alcohol.
-
At the cottage? Make sure pets have ID tags or microchips and a shaded spot to cool off.
You are reminded that if you see an animal in distress, call Provincial Animal Welfare Services at 1-833-9ANIMAL or contact local authorities.
