Police are reminding residents to be cautious when sending money online.

The Oxford OPP is investigating an online fraud after a Tillsonburg resident lost nearly $1,000 to a fake job posting.

On September 12, around 11 a.m., police received a report from a person who responded to a work-from-home advertisement on social media. The victim communicated with the suspect through a texting app, as instructed, and sent several e-transfers totaling just under $1,000 before realizing the offer was a scam.

The investigation is ongoing. Police are reminding residents to be cautious when sending money online and to research any job offers carefully. While many reputable companies use social media, scammers also use it to take advantage of people.

Anyone who believes they are a victim of fraud is urged to contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-495-8501 or the OPP at 1-888-310-1122 for assistance.
