Oxford County proposes new road safety strategy and dedicated traffic team

County councillors in Oxford are looking closer at traffic issues in the region

Oxford County Council is set to review a new proposal aimed at improving road safety and managing growing traffic demands across the region.

The plan recommends creating a dedicated Traffic Management and Road Safety Team within the Public Works department to coordinate programs, manage data, and oversee traffic control devices such as signals, signs, and speed management systems.

The new team would include a Transportation Technologist and a proposed Supervisor role starting in 2026. Together, they would focus on initiatives like traffic calming, collision analysis, and the development of a Made-in-Oxford Road Safety Strategy.

The report also recommends that Oxford County adopt the Good Roads Ontario Road Safety Audit Guideline to ensure safety is built into the design of all new infrastructure projects. These audits help identify potential hazards before construction begins, reducing long-term costs and improving safety outcomes.

Council will also discuss incorporating Automated Speed Enforcement and exploring Vision Zero principles tailored to both rural and urban areas. While the province may end the ASE program in 2026, staff will continue monitoring legislative updates.

Overall, the County’s goal is to enhance road safety for drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians through data-driven planning, inter-municipal collaboration, and proactive design standards.

Council will consider the proposal at its October 22nd meeting.
