Oxford MP continues to speak out on bail reform
Oxford MP Arpan Khanna is leading the charge for tougher bail laws, calling on the Liberal government to pass Bill C-242, the “Jail Not Bail Act,” to restore safety on Canadian streets.
The Conservative motion, introduced October 2nd in the House of Commons, urges Parliament to act quickly. Khanna’s bill would repeal the Liberal “Principle of Restraint” and create stricter bail conditions for major offences.
Khanna says Liberal reforms like Bills C-5 and C-75 have fueled a rise in violent crime, with 29% more homicides, 76% more sexual assaults, and 330% more extortion cases since 2015.
He pointed to recent high-profile cases, including a Markham home invasion involving a suspect already on bail for attempted murder, and the tragic killing of Bailey McCourt, murdered by her ex-husband hours after his release.
“Every morning we hear of shootings, carjackings, and assaults,” Khanna said. Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre backed the call, urging Liberals to scrap failed bail laws and put public safety first.
Conservatives say they’re prepared for extended sittings to ensure C-242 passes and violent offenders stay behind bars.
