A report estimates Tillsonburg Hydro would need at least $29 million in upgrades.
Tillsonburg Hydro and ERTH Power are exploring a potential collaboration aimed at strengthening local utility operations and preparing for growing energy needs in their communities.
The Town of Tillsonburg, ERTH Corporation, and its municipal shareholders announced Tuesday that discussions are underway, saying the move is driven by aging infrastructure, increasing energy demands, cybersecurity concerns, and the high cost of operating as a standalone utility.
A report estimates Tillsonburg Hydro would need at least $29 million in upgrades, a cost that could more than double local distribution rates for its 8,600 customers if absorbed alone.
Under the proposal, Tillsonburg Hydro would merge with ERTH Power, creating a larger, locally owned utility serving 33,000 customers across 16 communities.
In order to gain feedback from residents, two community information sessions have been planned: September 29 at the Tillsonburg Community Centre and October 6 at the Tillsonburg Town Centre, from 3 to 6 p.m.
