Woodstock issues warning after avian flu detected in geese at Southside Park

Woodstock recently received several reports of sick or dead geese, and testing confirmed the presence of avian influenza.

The City of Woodstock is urging residents to avoid contact with wild birds and their droppings after two Canada geese found in Southside Park tested positive for avian influenza.

City staff say they have received multiple reports of sick or dead geese in the park in recent weeks. Two of the dead birds were sent to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative for testing, which confirmed the presence of avian flu.

“We’re in contact with the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative to continue monitoring and tracking any sick or dead birds found in our parks,” said Reta Horan, Supervisor of Parks and Forestry. Adding that the City is also working with Southwestern Public Health to share information and ensure the safety of staff and the public.

Anyone who sees a sick or dead bird is asked not to handle it and instead report it to the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative at 1-866-673-4781.

Health officials advise residents to contact a healthcare provider if they develop flu-like symptoms after potential exposure to a sick or dead bird. Symptoms can mirror seasonal flu, including fever, cough, sore throat, fatigue, and body aches.

More information on avian influenza and prevention resources is available through Southwestern Public Health.
